About Me

Sandro-Alessio Gierens

PhD student in OS @ TUM | ex full-stack Rust developer @ LRZ

Right now I'm doing my PhD in operating systems and virtualization supervised by Prof. Reto Achermann at the Resilient Operating Systems Group at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), which is integrated into the Systems Research Group lead by Prof. Pramod Bhatotia.

I originally completed a BSc in physics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) with focus on computational quantum mechanics. Having discovered my passion for computers and programming I then did another BSc and MSc computer science at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) focussing more and more systems-level topics. The whole time I also worked as OpenStack cloud admin and later on full-stack Rust developer at Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ).

Research

Research Interests

I focus on Confidential Virtual Machines at the moment. There I mostly work at the hypervisor-level, so directly on the metal and ideally greenfield style.

Tech

Tech Stack

I love Rust and C, and do my magic in Neovim. I basically live in the terminal, e.g. bash, tmux, aerc for mails, and more. When it comes to infrastructure I'm relying on NixOS and ZFS.

Other

Hobbies

Well, I also program a lot outside of work ... But whem I'm not I love to do sports, in particular bouldering, cycling ideally on gravel, hiking, and much more.
